Our Founder

Joe Atwell

I started Viking Overland because I’ve always enjoyed the kind of riding that feels fun and well put together.

Over the years I’ve done dozens of trips into Europe — sometimes for a long weekend, sometimes for much longer. I’ve ridden bikes through parts of Asia, taken on Route 66 in the U.S., and explored more of Wales than I could ever pretend was accidental. Each trip taught me something slightly different.

What I kept coming back to was this: the best journeys weren’t always the biggest or the most famous. They were the ones that flowed. The ones where the group clicked. Where the days made sense. Where you finished tired, ate well, slept properly, and woke up ready to go again.

Viking Overland grew out of that idea.

I keep the groups small because it changes the whole feel of a trip. It’s calmer. Easier to manage. Nobody gets left behind, and nobody feels like they’re part of a convoy.

I design every route myself and ride them in advance. I think about how the second half of the day will feel, where the natural breaks are, how the terrain builds, and how we’ll all feel on Day Four — not just Day One.

This isn’t about chasing speed or collecting famous roads. It’s about putting together journeys that feel complete. Of course we all wanna tick some off.

If you enjoy riding with purpose, appreciate good roads wherever they are, and are happy being part of a small group — you’ll probably feel comfortable here.

At the end of the day, I’m just someone who still gets a buzz from crossing a border on two wheels.

And I’ve built this so we can keep doing that — properly.

Joe
